All You Need Is LOVE
An ancient notion popularized in our time John Lennon. But what does it mean, practically?
To “survive” we know a human body needs, basically food and water.
“To live, the human body requires essential elements like oxygen, water, and nutrients (from food), along with a stable internal environment (temperature, pressure) and a functioning nervous system for coordination, with immediate needs being oxygen and a stable nervous system, followed by water and food, all within certain physical conditions.” (ChatGPT)
Unlike John Lennon, ChatGPT does not seem to think LOVE is required to sustain human life. And I suppose from a purely clinical perspective, that is accurate. But what is a human life? Are we just the meat sack that makes up all of us? If that is all we are, then in this case, Chat GPT has it exactly right as far as the requirements to sustain that meat sack. And this is where Science would leave off with the question. As long as physical needs are met, life survives.

But John said “All You Need Is Love”, didn’t he? He did not say anything about those other things. But then, of course, he wouldn’t. John was a poet (a brilliant one!) John was not a scientist.

So maybe science is right, as far as what the human body (aka “the meat sack) requires to “survive”. To live, the meat sack requires these very basic elements. Okay, that is survive. But what about thrive? Fundamentally, I don’t think science really cares about thrive. Quality of life is not really considered. Alive/Dead. Black/White. That’s as far as science goes.
Of course, Maslow did not forget about love on his scale. He put love right after physical and safety needs. So for Maslow, once you get into that warm, safe cave with meat (or a least berries) on the table, all you need is a hug, I guess.
Well I think in this 21 century we have come to a time when we consider updating our understanding and our expectations.
